This is Jess from jesshuff.com. In this video, I’ll show you how to crochet into the Third Loop of a half double crochet round of amigurumi.
Working into the third loop creates a clean, defined edge on your project.
Normally when completing a stitch in amigurumi, you work into the top loops of the next stitch. This is the front loop, and this is the back loop.
The Third Loop refers to the horizontal bar behind the hdc stitch.
When working into the Third Loop, use whatever stitch your pattern calls for; it might be single crochets, it might be half double crochets, etc.
The only difference is rather than working your stitches in the top loops of each stitch, you’ll be working into the horizontal bar on the back of the hdc stitch.
Single Crochet in the Third Loop
In this example, I’m going to use a single crochet stitch.
- Insert your hook into the horizontal bar on the back of the next stitch.
- Yarn over. Pull the yarn through the stitch to draw up a loop.
- There should now be two loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops.
That completes the single crochet stitch in the Third Loop.
Invisible Decrease in the Third Loop
Let’s say you need to decrease with single crochets while working into the Third Loop.
When working on amigurumi, you typically use what’s known as an Invisible Decrease, where you work into the front loops only to complete the decrease.
This is how you would do an Invisible Decrease working into the Third Loop:
- Insert your hook into the horizontal bar on the back of the next stitch.
- Then insert your hook into the horizontal bar on the back of the next stitch.
- You now have 3 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over. Pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook.
- Yarn over. Pull the yarn through the remaining two loops on your hook.
That completes an Invisible Decrease stitch in the Third Loop.
